MICHAEL PERRYMAN has had a career in space science with the European Space Agency, where he was scientific leader of the Hipparcos astrometry mission from its acceptance in 1981 to its completion in 1997. Co-originator of the follow-on Gaia, he was its scientific leader in ESA between 1995-2008. He has subsequently spent periods at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy Heidelberg, University of Heidelberg, the Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton, and currently as Adjunct Professor, University College Dublin. Between 2014-16, he chaired the external ESA advisory committee on the implementation of the Gravitational Wave Observatory.
